I think it’s that the piece has a little comic idea – ‘James Joyce himself had not read the Wake‘ – that’s fine as a throwaway or aside, but mistakes the worth of that idea & builds a few hundred words around it, spins its wheels without a bit of imagination kicking in. Lazy.
